What it does

ILIAS is probably one of the most flexible Learning Management Systems on the market. With its internal permission management a range of learning scenarios can be realized. Hierarchical institutions have the possibility to map their organizational structure to the system but it can also be used as an open learning materials repository where every user may contribute content to the site.

Moreover, ILIAS supports the following learning objects: course, group, forum, learning modules (proprietary, HTML and SCORM/AICC formats), glossary, web resources, files, exercise, test and survey.

Due to its complexity and multitude of features, it's not easy to learn to use it but once you have become an experienced user it will offer you great flexibility to realize a wide range of learning experiences.

How can it be used for creation of OERs

ILIAS is capable of creating several types of learning materials. However, most of these so-called learning objects can only be used and displayed with ILIAS itself. For instance, if you use the built-in survey tool you may transfer your survey between different ILIAS installations but it is not possible to transfer it to other Learning Management Systems or to use it on a desktop computer.

Actually, only two types of ILIAS learning objects enable the creation of OERs:

  • Learning modules ILIAS: It is possible to export learning modules in HTML format so that they can be displayed on any computer.
  • Glossary: Like learning modules, glossaries can be exported in HTML format as well.

License support

  • For each learning object you may specify additional copyright metadata so it is possible though laborious to add an Open Content license.
  • There is no built-in support for adding Open Content licenses to content in an easy way.

Standards / Compatibility

ILIAS is compliant to the following standards:

  • SCORM 1.2 LMS-RTE3
  • AICC
  • LOM
  • IMS-QTI
