Open source a way forward - based on philosophy of learning - using and adapting.....paradigm based on a chance to learn...learning is linked to participation within a political party - have philosophy based on OSS - not that learn better using open tools - need support which is a challenge - people can be afraid on new things - using branded Google platform .....using open APIs - have to find ways of helping and supporting change = moving form proprietary infrastructure to OSS = opportunities for learning and sharing with others ...network of 100000 volunteers with small group of activists using to transfer, help and motivate others...provides us with information about what happening - have wiki platform - running seminars. Initiatives • one laptop per child • promotion creative commons
UHI beginning to think about creating social environment for distributed students and allow them to create communities that they want rather than what we expect - and accepting that large body of knowledge exists in formal communities - so create communities of interest for informal as well as formal knowledge. Increased take up of Web 2.0 tools - started as personal home interest - now being taken into classroom - allows staff to use client based applications and experiment without having to install on desktop or server - with interconnectivity increasing numbers of students and staff taking social space into formal learning space (e.g. photos on Flickr). Embracing idea PLE not sole or best environments for on-line learning. Issue of separating social and work life. As student part of work is developing own social standing (possible area for future research). For this important that people share a little more about themselves. question of how much and what they want to share. If share form own learning space then they will have own copy - no guarantee from institutional database. People should be able to move information from institutional to outside and to travel with them. Series problem with word virtual - artificial divide - young people perfectly happy combining two - "blended social life". See two environments sitting side by side = web 2 open space and managed institutional spaces - at moment no bridge between them...the missing link....about 85 - 90 per cent are in one space and perhaps 10 per cent in other - institutions should set themselves mission to migrate and become independent because that makes them lifelong learners – educate them to become independent learners - institutions a mission to provide cognitive scaffolding.....see slide full presentation on use of e-portfolio. gap between what PLEs could be doing and what are doing...great bulk of educators do not use what they have and do not know what they have...role for projects like this to experiment and to share...has to be marketed along with content which can be used immediately - teach teachers how to use this and offer them immediate reward - role for a content driven dissemination project..... Education system does not involve learners except from web 2.0 and social software tools - interactivity is the key word which elevates the education system - we interact in offline world - exchange information.....besides tools mentality has to change - students and professors have to me more project and concept orientated ... can exchange information between business and education ...as a business man I would like to employ people who are familiar working in informal and multilingual environments...need to be able to interact and work with other groups - web 2.0 groups work informal and project based ways .....we need personal computers for everyone, good bandwidth...people need to learn wider use of internet beyond gaming.....must have mentality to learn in own time Switching meaning of what is PLE (GA - sign that idea is maturing), services, layer, learner interface or a environment where learner does the learning - learning done by learners and not the institutions...institutions are service provider - this will be increasing trend in the future....learners will use services form within their own environment at own time and at own pace:- should think about tools that give people the opportunity to extend and help their learning.... Post professional development is becoming competence based and may well provide learning drawn form different institutions and contexts but does this apply to school or initial university education? Are there different models for developing qualifications and competence - based on accreditation and presentation of previously gained learning from different sources.
